How You Can Become an Insurance Agent in New Jersey

More than half the battle of becoming a licensed insurance agent is being able to find the right information. Since insurance agent licenses are regulated on a state level, you will need familiarized yourself with the rules, regulations and requirements of the state for which you're seeking a license. New Jersey's Department of Banking and Insurance is the governing agency when it comes to applying for and obtaining a New Jersey insurance agents license ( called a producer's license)

So What Should I Do

1. No matter what height you might have obtain in education or experience. In New Jersey,You must prove you're ready to take the agent's licensing exam in one of two ways.

You can either take the required courses as mandated by the state or you can complete the Insurance Education Waiver Application, which states that you have enough hands on experience and knowledge to take the licensing exam

2. Pass the agent licensing exam (producer licensing exam). Once you successfully pass the New Jersey agents licensing exam, your results will automatically be forwarded to the New Jersey State Department of Banking and Insurance computer system.

3. Get fingerprinted and undergo a criminal background check. In New Jersey you must submit to a full criminal background check and fingerprinting. You cannot proceed any further until after your background check is complete.

4. After passing the criminal background check, you will need to decide how you want your license issued. If you want in a trade name instead of your own name, you must have the trade name approved by the state prior to submitting your licensing application.

5. You can finally apply online for the license once you have met all of the above criteria. Visit the State of New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance website. There you will complete the electronic resident licensing form. You must provide your name/trade name, and tax identification number (which could be your Social Security number or Federal Employer Identification Number) for the application to be processed
