Apple new 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display The latest in technology news and trends

Apple new 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display

Today at its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple unveiled a fleet of new Macs, from its featherweight class MacBook Air line to a brand new MacBook Pro that borrows much of the DNA of its svelte cousins. Following rumors that a 15" MacBook Air would join Apple's 13" and 11" Air lineup, the company has revealed a new beast entirely: the next-generation MacBook Pro. The new notebook merges the ultra-slender design of the MacBook Air with the power and oomph of the more powerful MacBook Pro lineup, which is still favored for intensive activities like gaming and video editing.

The new MacBook Pro, which will retail for $2199, features up to 768GB of flash storage, an HD FaceTime camera (which should be a big improvement), a backlit keyboard, and a wealth of ports including two Thunderbolt ports, an SD card slot, an HDMI port and a USB 2.0/3.0 port on both sides. It boasts a battery life of up to seven hours, with an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor (i7 is premium), and up to 16GB of RAM. To top it off, the new MacBook will be the only member in the company's notebook line to boast a Retina displaylike the current generation iPhone and iPad, giving the notebook a pixel-rich resolution of 2880 x 1800. According to Apple, the new Pro weighs 4.5 lb., the lightest Pro model ever, and is roughly as thin as the MacBook Air at 0.71". The model begins shipping today for $2199.

Beyond the new addition to the MacBook lineup, Apple is refreshing its existing 11" and 13" MacBook Airs with a new Intel processor known as Ivy Bridge and USB 3.0 ports. The new Airs will also get updated 720p Facetime cameras to boost them into HD territory, a welcome change from the low-res cameras the line sports now. The 11" model will start at $999 with an upgrade option available at $1099 for a 128GB harddrive. The 13" will retail for $1199 and $1499, with the extra $300 netting you 256GB of flash storage, up from 128GB on the base 13" model.

Apple also updated its original 13" and 15" MacBook Pro notebooks with Intel Ivy Bridge processors and USB 3.0 ports, though it's hard to imagine giving the non-Retina Pros the time of day with such a compelling, pixel dense new notebook on the block
